This implies a need for much higher agricultural production, but increasing cultivated areas is constrained by other land-use needs. Current crops are peaking in productivity and some show declines in protein and micronutrients. This is linked to growth dilution resulting from increased CO2 fertilization, It also directs us to engineer crops for performance under future CO2 of 500 to 550 ppm. A wide range of tools have been developed recently for crop improvement, including genetic modifications. To utilize those, large-scale greenhouses with high controlled CO2 concentrations must be combined with genetic and physiology research for a range of crops. China has had policies restricting genetically modified crops, but in 2021 February, new policy is that government will support innovative research and development of GMO.
