Floral nectar production is central to plant pollination. Most flowering plant species produce floral nectar which is used as food by a variety of animals. In the nectar foraging process, these animals may transfer pollen within and between flowers, and thus effect plant pollination. Floral nectar is likely a valuable plant resource, especially in terms of energy, with plants experiencing costs\/ trade-offs associated with its production or absorption and adopting mechanisms to regulate nectar in flowers. However, the costs\/ trade-offs associated with production\/ absorption of floral nectar have been little studied and existing studies have been insufficiently quantitative. Furthermore, there has been little research that has demonstrated plant regulation of nectar in flowers.
