Bioenergy has lower climate change impacts than fossil fuels, it is attractive to mitigate climate change. The use of biomass for bioenergy is also advocated under the consideration of domestic energy security, the sustainability of renewable energy, and local economic development. Therefore, the climate change impacts of bioenergy should be correctly assessed. However, the traditional assessments failed to account for the stay of biomass-derived GHG emissions in the atmosphere, the effect on carbon dynamics of ecosystems and the decay of unused biomass. In consideration of these failures, a new framework was developed by integrating the carbon cycle in the atmosphere, carbon dynamics in the ecosystems, and decomposition of unused biomass. The new framework was applied to assess the climate change impacts of quite a few biomass-to-bioenergy systems. The results showed that all the biomass-to-bioenergy systems have lower climate change impacts than fossil fuels. The low climate change impacts were obtained only because the use of biomass can improve carbon storage of the ecosystems, or avoid decomposition of unused biomass. Therefore, this new framework is more persuasive in climate change impact assessment of bioenergy and can ensure sustainable utilization of biomass resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
