It is mainly produced by the sap (latex) of rubber trees (<a><em>Hevea brasiliensis<\/em><\/a> Muell. Arg) and has an essential role in reducing poverty in rural communities of many tropical countries. As it is a native species of the Amazon basin, Brazil was the primary source of rubber supply till the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century. It was first introduced in Asia in the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, and since then, the expansion of rubber plantation area and latex production has been occurring in this region. Nowadays, 89% of the rubber used worldwide is produced in this region including, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, China, and Malaysia, as the leading rubber producing countries, with approximately 60% solely originating from Thailand and Indonesia. This expansion on these historically non-traditional areas is still ongoing, with an additional 2 Mha of land being used for rubber cultivation between 2010 and 2017. <strong>Although rubber cultivation has improved the economic status of farmers, it has altered the habitat\u2019s ecology and ecosystem functions. <\/strong>In this seminar, I will explore our knowledge on the impact of rubber plantations on multiple ecosystem functions, particularly related to carbon storage, nutrient cycling, and biodiversity. I will also discuss important research gaps, strategies to improve ecosystem functions, and policies for sustainable cultivation.
