In terms of greenhouse gas emission saving, renewable energies are considered superior than traditional energies. Bioenergy is one of the renewable energy sources. However, this green energy type is currently on hot debate for its environmental impacts, such as the land use change and the biodiversity loss during the feedstock cultivation. To evaluate the global warming potential, the life cycle assessment model (LCA) serves as a powerful tool to quantify the potential environmental impact generated from a product across its whole life cycle. Nevertheless, generic LCA has a significant shortcoming as it is mainly based on the averaged representation of material and energy flows without including spatial heterogeneity. Thus, there is a rising attention about the reliability and accuracy of LCA. This leads to the necessity of performing a more regionalized LCA, driven by the fact that characterization factors in the majority of these impact categories are dependent on site-specific characteristics (e.g. population, soil types, climate factors, etc.). To improve the reliability of LCA results for sustainable bioenergy management, the inclusion of detailed spatial heterogeneity and life cycle inventory in a regional context is critical. In the case study, we integrated the Regional Life Cycle Assessment (RELCA) model with Geographical Information Systems in the context of central Germany. The RELCA model is a cradle-to-gate assessment methodology with the functional unit of one kilogram of rapeseed production. Both direct and indirect emissions from field operations, feedstock cultivation, transportation, biorefinery plant processing have been considered. In this seminar, we will try to extend the application of RELCA model in the context of China.
