Why some suitable species are absent, forming the dark diversity of that site, is a basic yet increasingly crucial question in the face of global biodiversity degradation. In the seminar, I will talk about a new metric, dark diversity affinity (DDA), which measures the tendencies of individual species to be absent from suitable sites and of individual sites to miss suitable species. Then I will demonstrate a newly developed framework to estimate DDA for individual species and sites, using empirical datasets of metacommunity of species presence\/absence, species functional traits, and site characteristics. By identifying accountable traits and environmental conditions, this framework allows mechanical understanding of the dark diversity formations.
