Abstract:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Drosophila melanogaster, the fruit fly originally found in tropical habitats, has emerged as a highly valuable model organism for research across diverse fields.\u00a0 Its small size, short life cycle, and ease of maintenance make it excellent for studies of fundamental biological processes such as development, behavior, and disease. Furthermore, Drosophila’s genetic similarity to higher organisms, including humans, allows for the exploration of conserved molecular pathways. In addition to its widespread use in genetics and developmental biology, Drosophila also shows promise as a model for studying various aspects of tropical plants, including insect-plant interactions and co-evolution. Overall, Drosophila serves as an exceptional model organism for research on many fronts. Its adaptability, genetic tractability, and relevance across disciplines continue to make Drosophila an indispensable resource for scientific exploration and discovery.\u00a0 My talk today will focus on using Drosophila to study the JAK\/STAT intracellular signaling pathway, its non-canonical function in regulating heterochromatin, and its implications in human cancer. We have found that the STAT protein plays a crucial role in maintaining heterochromatin stability, which is vital in many biological processes, including genome stability, lifespan regulation, stem cell maintenance, and tumor suppression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
