Global patterns of plant diversity on islands – richness, endemism, threat

Islands floras are well-known for their outstanding endemism, explosive radiations and spectacular evolutionary changes in plant form and function. Moreover, islands are natural laboratories where we can study evolutionary and ecological processes and consequently, island research has contributed massively to prominent concepts and theories. At the same time, biodiversity is vanishing faster on islands than anywhere else. In this talk, I will give an overview about the diversity of different island types worldwide, their environments and geological dynamics and about the plants that inhabit them. I will particularly focus on how large integrated biodiversity databases ( and ecoinformatics can help us to document diversity patterns and better understand the underlying biogeographical processes and to inform policy and management.
