The complexities and opportunities of plant-nematode interactions

Abstract:

Root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp.) is a devastating pathogen of most important crops, which manipulate plant cells to form complex feeding structures during pathogenesis.  Previous research suggests that root-knot nematodes secrete phytohormone mimics to initiate and maintain this unique plant cell morphology. Bioinformatic screening of all available root-knot nematode genomes revealed widespread phytohormone-like encoding genes, the number of which correlates with nematode genome size. Importantly, similar genes were not found in other animals. Nematode production of phytohormone mimics was confirmed by mass spectrometry and root bioassays established functional diversity of nematode phytohormone mimics in planta. The ubiquity and conservation of phytohormone mimics across Meloidogyne may provide crucial insight into the core plant developmental pathways required for nematode parasitism.
