Abstract:
Natural hybridization plays an important role in speciation and evolution. The study of natural hybridization can facilitate our understanding to the potential adaptive mechanisms of evolution and the process of speciation. Hybridization is particularly prevalent in rapidly diversifying taxa such as Rhododendron. This large, long-lived woody plant genus has undergone recent rapid adaptive radiation. Here, using Rhododendron as a case study, l will presenting how multiple data types, including morphological, genetic, ecological and niche data can be integrated to confirm the hybrid origin of a plant taxon, reveal the mechanisms of natural hybridization, the structure and dynamics of hybrid zones and infer plausible evolutionary outcomes of natural hybridization in Rhododendron.
