The weird and wonderful world of mycology

Abstract:

Fungi are a megadiverse group of organisms more closely related to humans than plants. They have played a pivotal role in the development of terrestrial life on the planet, provided untold billions of dollars in ecosystem services, and formed the backbone of numerous industries. Yet, we know little about this wonderful life form. Over the past decade, Peter’s research has shown that Asia is an ideal place to study fungi, featuring many unknown species and unstudied landuse systems. Topics from Peter’s talk will include the discovery of novel pathogens, fungi that can digest plastic, the domestication of edible mushrooms, and new species of deadly mushrooms. Through the course of the presentation, you will discover the extreme lengths to which mycologists go in order make these discoveries, and gain a glimpse into the weird and wonderful world of fungi.
