Soil fauna and plant litter diversity effects on litter decomposition

Abstract:

Plant litter decomposition is a major driver of carbon and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. Climate, litter quality, and activity of decomposers are the key factors that drive litter decomposition. Mixing litter from different plant species can alter the litter mixture qualities compared to the quality of the individual component species. Therefore, the diversity of plant litter might cause variation of decomposition rate when in mixture. Soil fauna play an essential role in litter decomposition that can influence decomposition directly and indirectly. Most studies have shown that soil fauna generally accelerate litter decomposition. In this talk, Dr. Juan Zuo will discuss the study about the effects of soil fauna and litter diversity on decomposition.
