Abstract:
Borneo is the third largest island on the earth and centre of the Southeast Asia archipelago. Known for its biodiversity richness, in the last century, the rate of deforestation and forest degradation has reduced the distribution of numerous plant and animal species. In this seminar, I will introduce the landscape ecology of this island in the context of Southeast Asia, its origin, and the great variety of forest types and forest structures recognized on the island. On this rich island, the non-flowering plants of fern and Lycophyte have over a thousand species. Continuous species are described yearly, and new records from Borneo increase the total richness. However, our knowledge of fern and lycophyte distribution is still poor, with areas that are rather well-collected and areas with no collection. The number of species per unit area has its pick on mountain sites, whereas the lowland forest has a notoriously low number of species. In this seminar, I will introduce the richness of lowland forests, how they are distributed and how the fern species aggregate within particular environments with given ecological conditions. Moreover, I will present how these sites play a role in the biogeography of the island within the Southeast Asia region and their pivotal role in the climate change phenomenon affecting the island.
