Integrated conservation research: the case of East Asian amphibians

Abstract:

The rise of conservation research and its novelty factor is an attractive research subject from numerous perspectives. Such interest provides an interdisciplinary approach with important innovations, ultimately supporting the conservation of the world’s biodiversity. A challenge now is to organise research findings in ways that influence preservation efforts. One marked fact is the amphibian decline, with over 40% of species worldwide listed as threatened. Looking at the proportion of threatened amphibian species for each biome, East Asia becomes a hotspot for both biodiversity and species at risk of extinction. Most wetlands in East Asia have transformed into agricultural wetlands due to rice production, affecting the species diversity and abundance in modified landscapes. Our approach integrates science-based conservation to define the threats to amphibians in East Asia attributed mainly to landscape changes linked to agriculture, climate change, and population displacement. We utilise a multi-step process encompassing all main fields of conservation to facilitate the flow of conservation policies, including mitigation plans, policy recommendations, conservation applications, and monitoring. By so doing, we provide effective support for East Asian diversity conservation while maintaining a sustainable relationship between humans and other species on the planet. Because of the strong impact of human activities, less developed regions are strongholds for amphibian diversity and unexpected amphibian conservation champions should be praised, but in addition science-based mitigation measures and policy recommendation are required.
