Abstract:
Tasmania is home to the tallest and biggest trees in the Southern Hemisphere. By focusing on citizen science and providing a platform for community members to experience the trees we changed the community’s impressions of a forest we named the Huon Valley Grove of Giants. This 100ha forest includes 300+ trees over 2.5 metres in diameter and 76 trees over 4.5 metres in diameter. By utilising tree climbing as both a method of gathering data and as an experiential tool we measured Tasmania’s most carbon dense forest and elevated 400 people 70 metres into the canopy. This combination of volunteer science and public engagement provided a very powerful set of tools to change a tree culture around one specific area and the state as a whole. Steve’s presentation will not only document this journey but also provide insight into his latest initiative Big Tree State.
