Abstract:
Diatoms are single cell eukaryotes and one of the important primary producers. Distribution of diatom are very widely, they can be found from all kinds of aquatic ecosystems, like ocean, lake river, waterfall etc. Compared to other animals and plants, diatoms have short life cycles, reproduce quickly, and respond quickly to the changes of environment, making them as the most powerful and reliable environmental indicators. Diatoms, as the most important groups of phytoplankton and benthic algae, are the forage organisms of birds, shellfish, fish and other aquatic organisms, and play an important role in the material cycle and energy flow. As a bioenergy, the main substance produced by diatom photosynthesis is oil, therefore, it is used in the research of new bioenergy. In this seminar, I will mainly discuss the freshwater diatom research in China, which will provide important basic information for the study of biodiversity, the research history and classification scheme.
