Environmental changes and food production in the Neotropics: contributions from plant-pollinator interactions

Abstract:

The Neotropical region harbour the largest fraction of Earth´s biodiversity and is facing a huge and fast land use change. The region is also the largest global food producer and many of the cultivated crops rely on pollinators to set fruits. During this talk we will overview the main drivers of environmental change in the Neotropics and how they impact pollinators and pollination. We will resume what is already known about pollinator dependence for most of the cultivated plants in Brazil (the biggest country in the Neotropical region). We will also go into the concept of pollination intensification and how natural/transformed lands could be dynamically connected in order to promote pollination and increased fruit set and food production. We end by presenting the situation of endangered pollinators and pollinator-dependent plants in Brazil and the public policies under debate to protect them. The talk is aimed at getting the audience to think about connections among fundamental ecological concepts, ecological applications and decision making, in order to build more sustainable societies worldwide.
