Abstract:
This talk reviews three major processes that shaped European vegetation evolution, with special emphasis on evidence from the Iberian Peninsula: palaeogeographic controls on plant distributions and migration pathways, the replacement of palaeotropical floras by arctotertiary floras, and the Neogene development of open herbaceous ecosystems. Case studies from the Hanau Basin, the Dacian Basin, and Iberia highlight how climate change, basin evolution, marine connectivity, and hydrological reorganization jointly structured Cenozoic plant communities. The presentation also underscores the value of palynology for reconstructing major patterns of vegetation change through deep time.
