Fossils reveal the mystery of the origin of flower plants

Abstract:

Dr. Gongle Shi is a paleobotanist mainly working on plant fossils and plant macroevolution in deep time. His research aims to understand the history and patterns of plant diversity and plant evolution in Mesozoic and Cenozoic, focuses on the origin and early diversification of flowering plants and the origin and early history of modern plant diversity. Gongle received his Bachelor’s degree from Nanjing University, earned his Master’s degree and Ph.D. from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and conducted postdoctoral research at Yale University, USA. He is currently a professor and the chair of the Department of Cenozoic Life and Environment at the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Gongle has published over 80 papers in international journals including Nature, National Science Review, Science Advances, PNAS, New Phytologist etc. He also serves as a member of Committee on Fossil Plants, International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT), a Research Associate of the Field Museum (Chicago, USA), and an editorial board member of Global and Planetary Change and BMC Ecology and Evolution.
