A master regulater short-root (SHR)  decides cell fate in plant root

Abstract:

As an organ that directly obtains nutrients from soil, plant roots have high developmental plasticity. Plants response to environmental stress or exogenous plant growth regulators through root morphological and physiological changes, and even interact with environmental factors to produce new organs. Such as, Legume roots and rhizobia form nodules, symbiotic new organs in which fixed-nitrogen and photosynthetic products are exchanged between rhizobia and plant cells. Previous studies showed that SHORT-ROOT (SHR), a GRAS transcription factor, regulates asymmetric cell divisions and cell-fate specification during initiation of the endodermal cell layer. In this seminar, we will explore the interaction between SHR and environmental signals to jointly determine the maturation of root cortex and the cell fate of nodule primordial. We have recently found that SHR–SCR module specifies legume cortical cell fate to enable nodulation. Our results provide insight into the mechanisms of nodule organogenesis in soybean.
