Abstract:
Australian native plants are remarkably tolerant to a range of environmental conditions in which they grow. As the climate changes, background warming and extreme climatic events are pushing plants closer to their physiological limits. My research focuses on how tolerant native species are to heat and their capacity to adjust their physiology to better cope with heat to maintain function and fitness. I will highlight what we have learned from field, glasshouse, and laboratory experiments, then introduce the Thermal Load Sensitivity framework that uses the common currencies of temperature and time to explore dose-responses. Our current work is using this framework to study the sensitivity of different tissue types and life stages to heat, to integrate impacts of heat across life cycles.
