Biotic and abiotic drivers of subtropical forest regeneration – insights from Guangxi forests

Abstract:

Natural regeneration is a vital mechanism that maintains healthy forests, and forests secure biodiversity and provide critical ecosystem services. Yet, our understanding of the regeneration processes, and the key role they play in shaping community assembly and dynamics, still has numerous gaps. Here, I will discuss the role of biotic and abiotic drivers that impact early regeneration of subtropical forest tree flora, through insights into their seedling bank and soil seed bank dynamics. I will also summarize lessons learned from mentoring graduate students, managing research grants, and developing international cooperation links for enhancing student teaching and research experiences.
